September — November
Autumn in Japan
Koyo Season
Japan's second great spectacle — the fiery reds, golds, and oranges of koyo transform the country's mountains, temple gardens, and lakesides into glowing masterpieces.
About Autumn
The Art of Koyo
Koyo — the changing of autumn leaves — is Japan's second most celebrated seasonal phenomenon after cherry blossoms. The transformation begins in Hokkaido in late September and moves southward, reaching Kyoto and Osaka in November.
Unlike spring's brevity, autumn foliage can be enjoyed over a longer period as the colour front moves across the country. Maples (momiji), ginkgo trees, and the varied deciduous forests of Japan create a palette that photographers and artists return to year after year.

Autumn is also Japan's most comfortable travel season. Temperatures between 12°C and 22°C, clear skies, and less rainfall than spring make it ideal for hiking, cycling, and long days of sightseeing.
