June — August
Summer in Japan
Festivals & Fire
Japan's summer is alive with colour and sound — thousands of matsuri festivals, dazzling fireworks over ancient rivers, and the hum of cicadas in mountain forests.
About Summer
The Season of Matsuri
Japanese summer is festival season. From the solemn Gion Matsuri in Kyoto to the explosive Awa Odori dance festival in Tokushima, communities across Japan celebrate their heritage with colour, music, and magnificent fireworks displays called hanabi taikai.
The season runs from June through August, with the monsoon (tsuyu) bringing heavy rains in June and early July. Once the rains clear, warm, sunny days dominate, though humidity in the cities can be intense. Escape to the highlands of Nagano or the breezy shores of Okinawa for relief.
🎆 Key summer events: Gion Matsuri (July, Kyoto) · Sumida River Fireworks (July, Tokyo) · Obon festival (August) · Awa Odori (August, Tokushima)
Average temperatures range from 26°C to 35°C in lowland cities. Mountain areas like Kamikochi, Nikko, and the Japan Alps offer refreshing cool air and spectacular scenery throughout the season.

Travel Tips
Planning Your Summer Visit
Beat the Heat
City temperatures can reach 38°C. Start sightseeing early, take midday breaks indoors, and keep hydrated. Convenience stores are lifesavers.
Festival Tickets
Major fireworks festivals sell reserved seating quickly. Book hanabi seats 1–2 months in advance for the best views.
Okinawa Timing
Rainy season ends in Okinawa by late June. July and August offer the best sea conditions for snorkelling and diving.
Mountain Escapes
Kamikochi, Nikko, and Hakone offer cool retreats from city heat. Temperatures are typically 10°C lower than Tokyo in summer.
Wear a Yukata
Rent a light summer yukata to wear at festivals. Many ryokan and rental shops near festival venues offer affordable packages.
Overnight Buses
Night buses are a budget-friendly way to travel between cities. They save on accommodation and travel time simultaneously.
