March — May
Spring in Japan
Sakura Season
The world's most spectacular floral display — millions of cherry trees bloom across Japan, transforming parks, riverbanks, and temple paths into a sea of soft pink.
About Spring
The Magic of Sakura
Japan's spring season is defined by the blossoming of cherry trees — sakura — a phenomenon so beloved that it has its own word: hanami, meaning "flower viewing." Japanese people gather under the blooming boughs to eat, drink, and celebrate the fleeting beauty of the season.
The bloom season typically begins in southern Kyushu in late March, moving northward through Honshu in early to mid April, and reaching Hokkaido in late April and early May. The flowers last only one to two weeks, making timing crucial.
🌸 Peak bloom dates 2026: Kyoto March 25 – April 7 · Tokyo March 28 – April 9 · Hirosaki April 18 – May 2
Beyond cherry blossoms, spring brings warm temperatures between 10°C and 22°C, making it one of the most comfortable times to explore Japan on foot. Wisteria, tulips, and rapeseed flowers extend the floral season well into May.

Travel Tips
Planning Your Spring Visit
Book Early
Spring is Japan's most popular travel season. Book accommodation 3–6 months in advance, especially in Kyoto and Tokyo.
What to Pack
Layers are essential. Mornings and evenings can be cool (5–10°C) while afternoons warm to 18–22°C. Light jacket is a must.
Get a JR Pass
A 14-day JR Pass allows unlimited Shinkansen travel and is essential for following the sakura front northward.
Visit Early Morning
Famous spots like Philosopher's Path and Maruyama Park are crowded by 9am. Arrive at dawn for peaceful, mist-covered scenes.
Watch the Weather
Rain and wind can strip petals quickly. Check forecasts and visit within 2–3 days of full bloom for best results.
